Our Leadership Team
Sand n' Straw Foundation is led by a small, hands-on team and overseen by a volunteer Board of Directors committed to transparency, sound stewardship, and the long-term health of our mission. Below you can learn more about the people who run our programs day to day and the board members who guide our organization's direction.
April Viles serves as Program Director of Sand n' Straw Foundation, overseeing Young Pioneers and the Foundation's broader educational offerings, including seasonal workshops, garden and fruit tree education, and community harvest opportunities. She founded Young Pioneers in 2021, guiding its growth from a small handful of families to a program currently serving over 300 children a semester. In 2026, we were able to support 26 children through scholarships. April is passionate about ensuring that every child, regardless of family circumstance, has the chance to learn outdoors, get their hands in the soil, and discover the natural world.
Rich Viles serves as Farm Director of Sand n' Straw Foundation, overseeing all aspects of the six-acre regenerative farm, including soil health, crop planning, fruit tree care, and pesticide-free growing practices. He has spent 8 years farming this land and developing the farm's regenerative methods, and leads farm tours, workshops, and the practical, hands-on instruction that anchors the Foundation's educational programs. Rich believes that working the land with care — without shortcuts or chemicals — is one of the most powerful lessons we can offer the next generation.
Sand n' Straw Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization (EIN 83-0645068).
